Community: Margaret Karlinski

Margaret Karlinski, a chemist and aromatherapist with a deep understanding of clean skincare, became our gentle “green police”—always there to patiently answer every question I had.

From your perspective as a chemist and aromatherapist, how can anyone judge a brand's commitment to clean beauty?

"For me, clean beauty is not simply a label—it is a way of seeing, caring, and making choices that honour both nature and the human body. As a chemist and aromatherapist, I approach every ingredient with curiosity and discipline, aware that its origin, its scent, and its effect are inseparable. Clean does not mean simple; it means conscious.

Brands uphold this integrity when transparency is treated as a principle rather than a marketing tool—documenting sources, revealing the journey from raw material to final blend, and formulating with both safety and sensory pleasure in mind. Sustainability, efficacy, and authenticity must exist together. A product that feels exquisite and performs beautifully can also respect ecosystems, communities, and the science that supports it.

When clean beauty is approached in this spirit, it moves beyond terminology and becomes a lived practice—one that invites attention, care, and respect. It is both an ethical commitment and a sensorial dialogue: a way of connecting with the natural world while honouring what the body and mind instinctively recognises as true."
